Project REHAB attended the Shotgun Metagenomics Sequencing training conducted on March 4–8, 2024 at the DNA Sequencing Core Facility of the Philippine Genome Center (PGC), University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City.
The training was organized and facilitated by the Philippine Genome Center and focused on introducing participants to the principles and workflows in shotgun metagenomics. Sessions combined lectures with laboratory activities, allowing participants to observe and work through key steps in sequencing-based analysis of microbial communities.
Throughout the five-day program, participants were exposed to procedures such as sample preparation, sequencing workflows, and data generation. Discussions were conducted on how metagenomic approaches are applied in biological and environmental research. The hands-on activities provided practical training to the concepts discussed during the sessions.
The experience provided REHAB researchers with a clearer understanding of current metagenomics techniques and their potential applications. This will help in future research activities that require high-throughput sequencing approaches of microbial communities.
